Virginians for Better Transportation Conducts Radio Campaign to Educate Public About Statewide Transportation Funding Crisis
July 11, 2005

Richmond, Va. – Virginians for Better Transportation (VBT) is conducting a radio campaign to help educate members of the public about the transportation funding crisis facing the Commonwealth.

Two radio commercials began airing today and will continue through July 24. They can be heard in targeted areas across the state including Richmond, Winchester, Roanoke, Fredericksburg and Hampton Roads and are part of the ongoing efforts of the statewide It's Time campaign, which kicked-off in Richmond in late April.

"The radio commercials emphasize Virginia's need for long-term, multimodal solutions to the transportation funding crisis," said Steve Haner, vice president of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce and VBT steering committee coordinator.

"Our efforts have already helped to make transportation one of the principal issues in this year's state elections, if not the major issue," Haner added. "Each gubernatorial candidate is discussing transportation, and the same is true for the people running for House of Delegates."

The radio campaign encourages members of the public to learn more about the transportation funding crisis and join VBT in calling for long-term, multimodal solutions. They can do both at the campaign Web site, www.itstimevirginia.org.

"It's important that people understand the real issues we're facing in the Commonwealth. Transportation problems cost Virginians more than $4 billion a year. We simply cannot wait any longer. It's time Virginia demands real solutions for better transportation," Haner said.

The scripts for the VBT commercials are as follows:

VBT spot 1:
Whether we live in the mountains, the D.C. suburbs or at the beach, Virginians have one thing in common: major transportation headaches. Congested commutes. Shortages of mass transit and passenger rail. Thousands of substandard bridges. Virginia's transportation problems threaten our quality of life, but we don't have to suffer in silence. VBT spot 2:
