Statewide Ad Campaign Demands Solutions
October 17, 2005

Richmond, Va. – Virginians for Better Transportation (VBT) has launched a statewide advertising campaign encouraging Virginians to demand that the next General Assembly adopt long-term solutions to the state’s transportation funding crisis.

The advertising campaign kicked off today and will continue through Nov. 8. It consists of print, radio and television ads and focuses on the need for long-term, multimodal solutions to the transportation funding crisis and ways in which Virginians can help make a difference.

The advertisements are available on the It’s Time Web site at www.itstimevirginia.org and are a part of VBT’s ongoing communications efforts of the statewide It’s Time campaign, which was launched in Richmond in late April.

"Transportation has been a major theme of the 2005 political campaigns, but there won’t be any follow through at the next General Assembly unless the people get involved," Steve Haner, VBT coordinator and former vice president of public policy with the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, said.

"We waste a quarter billion gallons of gasoline and hundreds of millions of dollars stuck in traffic. We don’t have the money for mass transit options everybody knows would help. We have thousands of substandard bridges. It has been almost 20 years since Virginia made serious, long-term progress on transportation. It’s time to get serious again.

"Without a long-term commitment to improve transportation, all Virginians will be affected – our time, our families, our jobs, our safety and our quality of life. We cannot afford to wait any longer. It’s time Virginia demands real solutions for better transportation and we’re hoping that the advertisements will resonate with members of the public who face this crisis in their daily lives," he said.

VBT is a diverse and expanding advocacy group working to implement statewide, multi-modal transportation solutions through increased, dedicated and sustainable funding and responsible business practices. VBT is conducting a public awareness campaign to educate Virginians about the Commonwealth's transportation funding challenges and the essential role transportation plays in the quality of life of all citizens. It's time for a comprehensive, long-term solution. To learn more about VBT, please visit www.itstimevirginia.org or call 804-237-1399.
