Virginia localities call for transportation solution

Leading up to this month's transportation special session, which starts the 23rd, 16 Virginia localities have adopted a resolution calling for Gov. Tim Kaine and the Virginia General Assembly to enact a significant transportation funding package in order to provide a resolution to the Commonwealth's well-documented transportation infrastructure needs.

The localities support the need for sustainable transportation revenues in order to facilitate economic growth in the Commonwealth, more money for road construction and maintenance projects, an increase in local road funding and bridge construction subsidy, etc.

Localities that have adopted resolutions include:

The City of Charlottesville
Rockingham County
The City of Portsmouth
The City of Falls Church
The City of Wytheville
The City of Harrisonburg
The Town of Middleburg
The Town of Christiansburg
The Town of Vienna
Greensville County
Nelson County
Albemarle County
The City of Bristol
Loudoun County
Clark County
The City of Galax

More localities are expected to adopt resolutions in the coming weeks.

Over 185 transportation projects to be cancelled/unfunded if transportation solution is not reached

Due to the slowing economy and the removal of some of HB 3202's funding mechanisms, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has had to cut its transportation funding budget by $1.1 billion.

This massive cut will hit Virginia's localities the hardest with a 40 percent reduction in local road funding. This means that many of Virginia's much needed local transportation projects and road improvements will be removed from VDOT's Six-Year Improvement Plan (SYIP) if a funding solution is not reached during this month's transportation special session.

Quotes from around the Commonwealth
  • From The Richmond Times-Dispatch: In an opinion piece which addresses this month's transportation special session, Hugh Keogh, president of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, said "If the General Assembly were to provide a fix for the regional plans for Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads without addressing the maintenance shortfall, then the looming maintenance needs would siphon off new construction dollars for road and mass transit projects that are badly needed in those areas and across the commonwealth. That is why any plan must address the maintenance shortfall." To read the entire editorial, click here.

  • From the News & Advance: In an opinion piece which addresses the need for a transportation funding package during this month's special session, a concerned Lynchburg resident said "The response of many Republican legislators to the governor's proposal is a terse 'No.' Many don't see, or are blind to, the statewide maintenance crisis that's looming a few years out."
