Welcome to the Virginians for Better Transportation It's Time Web site. This site provides information about the
Commonwealth's transportation funding crisis and our coalition's efforts to inform Virginians about this issue and bring
about a solution.
Current Situation
As the 2008 special session came to an end, so did the Commonwealth's hopes of reaching a much-needed transportation
funding solution.
Yet again, the General Assembly has failed to live up to its commitment to fix our transportation system and as a result the
burden will now fall on the shoulders of all Virginians.
In the next year Virginians will be faced with:
- Wasting another $260 million gallons of gas due to being stuck in traffic;
- Paying more than $900 per licensed driver due to congestion and increased vehicle maintenance costs due to poor road conditions;
- A decline of more than 44 percent in local road funding;
- The elimination or delay of 195 projects that were scheduled for construction by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT);
- A public transit system that is unable to meet ridership needs;
- The loss of much-needed jobs and dollars for Virginia's economy that would be generated from an increase in transportation funding;
- No new major highway corridor projects such as Rt. 460, I-81, The Third Crossing, etc.;
- Traveling across 1,746 bridges that are structurally deficient;
- No new rail initiatives such as high speed rail, rail service to Virginia Beach/Norfolk, expansions of the Virginia Railway Express or
I-81 corridor rail improvements.
As a concerned Virginian please do your part and reach out to your local legislators, the Governor and members of the media to let them know
that enough is enough! Virginia simply cannot afford to wait any longer for a long-term, dedicated, multi-modal, statewide transportation
funding solution.
Virginians for Better Transportation (VBT) urges members of the General Assembly to enact definitive solutions to
Virginia’s transportation funding crisis.
These solutions must include long-term, sustainable and dedicated funding and provide for all modes of
transportation. As a statewide expanding advocacy group representing businesses, organizations, individuals and
industry leaders, we recognize how this issue affects every Virginian. It’s time for a comprehensive,
long-term solution.
